Iron Age (2 CECs)

The aging process is a daunting and inevitable one, which is why it’s essential to take every action possible to improve overall health for longevity and quality of life. Weight lifting and resistance training are the best ways to prevent age-related muscle loss and to improve functional independence. Weight lifting demonstrates improvement in static and dynamic balance and gait (reducing falls), neuromuscular function (improving coordination and proprioception) as well as having a significant impact on confidence and self-efficacy. So many reasons to hit the weight room yet, big machines and free weights often intimidate many older adults from this form of exercise. There are many opportunities for older adults to attend group resistance training classes but this workshop, will focus on the weight room. The pressure in our culture to be perfect, thin and to conform to social expectations is enormous. Magazines, TV/movies and social media are constantly bombarding the message on how to be fit (thin? muscular?) and young (treating wrinkles like an unwanted disease). Health, has become an alibi for improving appearance. Though it is well-known that regular exercise has health and fitness benefits, unfortunately too often the perception of body image negatively affects these health-promoting behaviours. Body image struggles not only can affect our participants and clients, it can affect us as fitness leaders and personal trainers. By avoiding body dissatisfaction and promoting acceptance through health literacy, we can promote a sincere approach to health living: mentally, emotionally, and physically. Leave this session with ideas to help promote and support that it is our differences that make us beautiful!
