Christine van der Hoek
CPT, CFP, Mfc’s Fitness Leader of the Year 2005
Christine is an instructor, trainer, educator, mountain biker, adventure traveler, triathlete and 3-time Ironman finisher. Christine has been involved professionally and recreationally in fitness for 25 years. Owner of The Training Zone and manager of fitness programs at Canada’s largest medical fitness facility (Wellness Institute), she has experience sharing ideas with other leaders, clients and participants in relation to their health and wellness goals.
Sheena Kilpatrick
Has been teaching fitness classes since 1997. She graduated from Queen’s University with a Bachelor of Physical and Health Education. Sheena went on to complete her 500 hour Hatha/Ashtanga Yoga Instructor in India. She also also completed additional 50 hours of yoga training in Yin Yoga with Bernie Clark, 20 hours in Restorative Yoga and 75 hours in Pre and Post Natal Yoga. She is also a fully certified STOTT Pilates instructor and Exercise Physiologist (CSEP) and Personal Trainer. Sheena is an Instructor Trainer with the Manitoba Fitness Council offering many courses across the province. She also teaches a 200 hour Canadian Yoga Alliance instructor program,
Dr. Shaelyn Strachan
Dr. Strachan is an assistant professor at the University of Manitoba within the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management. She attained her Ph D is Kinesiology from the University of Waterloo in 2005. She was awarded a Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation post-doctoral fellowship and conducted research on physical activity identity and older adults at the University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Strachan’s research is grounded mainly in social-psychological theories. Her work focuses on aspects of the self and the role that these variables play in the self-regulation of health behaviours, including physical activity. Springing from this more basic research, she also conducts intervention research to apply what she and other researchers have found and to further test theoretical hypotheses in real-world settings. Her research has been funding by agencies such as SSHRC and the Manitoba Health Research Council.
Heather Hiscock
Heather is a Training Coordinator at the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Heather develops and delivers experiential Disability Awareness workshops to people of all ages in schools, businesses and workplaces. In addition, she is a Manitoba Fitness Council Aquatic Fitness Instructor and an active volunteer within the non-profit sector.
Lori Berard RN CDE
Consultant in Diabetes and Clinical Research, Canada
Lori Berard is Diabetes Educator with an expertise in diabetes education, management and clinical research. She is currently an international consultant in diabetes management and clinical research operations. She was the Nurse Manager at the WRHA Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg Diabetes Research Group and a Faculty Member at the University of Manitoba Department of Medicine Section of Endocrinology until July 2017. As a certified diabetes educator, she has over 30 years’ experience in the area of diabetes and continues working in the community as a Diabetes Nurse Clinician/Educator at the Wellness Institute Seven Oaks General Hospital. She continues to be actively involved in many research and educational initiatives with numerous presentations and publications. Lori has been a professional member and major volunteer of Diabetes Canada for more than 25 years and has extensive experience with the Clinical Practice Guidelines. She has received many honors and awards related to her work in diabetes.
Amy Houston
Amy is a Winnipegger born and raised. She has always had a love for sports from a young age. Amy began her yoga journey taking her first hot yoga class in 2008. She fell in love with it instantly and has completed more than 500 hours of yoga teacher training in various styles of yoga, including paddle board yoga. She loves to spend time outside whenever possible. Most recently Amy has also pursued a passion for spin and has been teaching at WPG Cycle since Fall 2016. She is currently working on another 200 hour teacher training in Yoga Actions at Serene Yoga. She is just finishing up her MFC certification. She is a go getter and is very excited to be able to share her love of paddling, yoga and fitness with others
Silvina Holzman
Silvina moved from Argentina in 2004 with her husband and two kids, and later expanded her family by bringing home a golden retriever puppy. She has a degree in Physical Education and is certified as a Fitness, Zumba, Zumba Gold, and PACE (People with Arthritis Can Exercise) instructor. She enjoys helping adults and seniors get in shape, as well as introduce them to different music styles like salsa, merengue, and Latin music. Silvina delivers classes through the City of Winnipeg, Louis Riel School Division, along with a variety of community centers.
