Hecla Fitness Leader Retreat – Session Details

Intro To TAI CHI (3 CEC)

Tai Chi originates from ancient China and consists of fluid, gentle movements that are relaxed and slow in tempo. It can be practiced almost anywhere and is a suitable form of exercise for just about anyone. One form of Tai chi is Sun Style which is a set of 12 movements. These movements are characterized by gentle forward and backward steps that are safe and easy to learn.


MFC Aquatic Exercise Certification (18 CEC)

Leaders will learn how to design, modify and instruct safe, effective and appropriate fitness programs to meet the needs of apparently healthy individuals or special populations who have received medical clearance in an aquatic setting. Course will include both deep and shallow water training.


PARQ+ (.75 CEC)

How do we know if participants are healthy enough to participant in fitness classes and activities? We use a research based evidence tool, the PARQ+. Let us walk you through the process and take you through a few examples of the form.


Zumba Cardio Blast (.5 CEC)

Fire up your morning with a non-stop, get-down-and-dance, high energy workout to the sounds of Africa, Reggaeton, Hip Hop, Latin Rhythms and more. Grooving to the music and getting your heart rate up never felt so good! Take your body, mind and soul on a full-blown fitness journey.


Eccentric vs Concentric Contractions (2.0 CEC)

Specific adaptations resulting from isolated eccentric vs concentric training have been well documented over the last couple decades, with a majority of this research having been performed in controlled laboratory settings. This session will review what is traditionally “known” about the study of Ecc vs Con contractions and will highlight recent advances in this area that pertain specifically to more traditional and applicable (gym) training methodologies.


Leading the Visually Impaired (1.5 CEC)

Everyone, including people with visual impairments, can benefit from some form of exercise. Discuss your needs with a fitness instructor at a local gym, health club, or community center. Most instructors can work one-on-one with you to create a fitness program that is safe and effective, but how does it work when you teach group fitness.


Exercise & Intensity (2.0 CEC)

Many recent developments in research on exercise intensity have been made. Is there an optimal exercise intensity for fat utilization? Where does HIIT training fit into the practice of an exercise professional? Is it important for exercise professionals to prescribe a certain exercise intensity? These questions will be explored in relation to exercise intensity.


Social Media: Build Your Tribe (1.5 CEC)

65% of North American adults are using social networking sites – nearly a tenfold increase in the past decade. It’s time to power up your story thru social media engagement strategies and share your love for fitness while opening a doorway to a world of opportunity. Leave this session with tips and tricks to engage with would-be participants online and translate that into your real world classes.


Resistance Training for Muscle Hypertrophy (2.0 CEC)

This session will highlight both known and recent advances in training prescriptions designed to elicit muscle hypertrophy. Along with a review of the literature regarding training to increase muscle size, some general conclusions and practical training recommendations will be outlined.


Functional Anatomy of the Shoulder Complex (3 CEC)

Deepen your understanding of the anatomy and function of the shoulder complex. This workshop reviews the structure of the shoulder, common injuries, & injury prevention through proper alignment for safe stabilization & movement of the upper limb in physical activity. The Beginners Guide to Meditation (1.5 CEC)

Meditation is the art of looking inside and discovering one’s own inner being. Meditation leads us not only to totally new inner experiences, but helps us also to transform our day-to-day life into a better, more meaningful and more fulfilling existence.


Is Exercise Anti-Inflammatory?(2.0 CEC)

This session will provide a framework to explore the theory that many common diseases are precipitated or caused by a chronic low grade inflammation. Theoretically, one of the benefits of exercise may be due to its anti-inflammatory properties. This lecture will focus on some of the physiological mechanisms whereby exercise may be anti-inflammatory and discuss potential implications for exercise professionals.


What Moves You? (2.0 CEC)

Motivation can be at the root of both success and failure so how do we ensure we prepare clients for success in the short-term and over the long haul? This session will discuss current and new strategies for motivating clients. We will delve into the emotional side of motivation to create a deeper connection with clients, instilling the appreciation for intrinsic motivation. Learn what makes your clients tick while reinvigorating yourself.


Water Relaxation (.75 CEC)

Can be a gentle form of body therapy performed in warm water, (around 35°C.) It combines elements of massage, joint mobilisation, and muscle stretching. The receiver is continuously supported while being floated. The deeply relaxing effects of warm water and nurturing support, combine with the movements, stretches, massage and point work, to create a a range of therapeutic benefits and potential healing on many levels.
