Instructor Stephen Cornish - Manitoba Fitness Council - Fitness Leader Winnipeg

Stephen Cornish

Joined the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management at the University of Manitoba as an Assistant Professor in July of 2013. Prior to his current appointment he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education at the University of Lethbridge. He completed a B.Sc. (Physical Education), M.Sc. (Kinesiology), and Ph.D. (Kinesiology) all from the University of Saskatchewan. His current teaching assignment in the Faculty includes Fitness Appraisal and lifestyle Counselling as well as Advanced Fitness Appraisal and Lifestyle Counselling which prepare students to challenge the CSEP-CPT and CEP exams.

Joel Krentz

B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D. (Candidate) CSEP-CEP – Assistant Professor, Brandon University Joel was recently hired as an Assistant Professor at Brandon University in the Department of Physical Education. Making his way to Brandon from the University of Saskatchewan, Joel is currently in the process of completing his Ph.D. in Kinesiology with a specialization in applied exercise physiology. His current research focuses on the effects of contraction type and training intensity on strength and muscle hypertrophy. In addition to his academic work as a professor, Joel is a CSEP-CEP and has worked as a strength and conditioning coach with numerous high-level amateur and professional athletes. In his leisure time, Joel enjoys working out and playing baseball among other sports.

Bonnie Hopps

Fitness Program Coordinator for The Arthritis Society, Manitoba division, has been certified by Dr. Paul Lam in Tai Chi for Arthritis Instructor Update Course, Tai Chi for Arthritis Part II Course, and Tai Chi for Diabetes Instructor’s Course. She is also certified as an Arthritis Foundation Exercise Instructor/Trainer, Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Instructor/Trainer



Instructor Ruth Reis - Manitoba Fitness Council - Winnipeg Fitness Leader

Ruth Reis

Has a love of fitness and teaching has spanned over 30 years. After training to be an instructor in 1982, she began teaching employee fitness classes. She followed this by completing her provincial certification in 1985, and has since continued her education with Manitoba Fitness Council (MFC).  She has pursued interests in martial arts, where she attained her 1st Dan black belt in TaeKwonDo in 1986 and her 3rd Dan in 2011. Yoga began in 2000 followed by education and training with Maureen Rae Studios. Today, Ruth is an MFC yoga certified instructor, teaching at various venues in Winnipeg including the CNIB and her own private studio.

Is owner and operator of Metamorphosis fitness | wellness | athlete development in Morden, MB. She enjoys the contrast of working with athletes and clinical populations. Working with these two diverse groups provides opportunity for novel learning and practical approaches to help make the best of difficult setbacks. Her training philosophy focuses on building a healthier body and a more balanced life. She encourages clients to push their own boundaries mentally and physically



Instructor Elizabeth Cooper - Manitoba Fitness Council - Winnipeg Group Fitness Certification

Elizabeth Cooper

Has been a STOTT PILATES® Certified Instructor since 2000, and an Instructor Trainer for Merrithew Health & Fitness™ specializing in STOTT PILATES since 2003.  She teaches at Pilates Manitoba in Winnipeg.  A graduate of the Senior Professional Program of the School of Contemporary Dancers, she is also an aerial dance performer, choreographer, and head aerial arts instructor at Monica’s Danz Gym.   Elizabeth specializes in teaching and performing aerial silks, hoop, trapeze, rope, and sling.  She is committed to safe standards in teaching circus arts, focusing on the anatomy of acrobatic movement and injury prevention and has presented workshops on shoulder anatomy care at Pilates Manitoba and at circus schools in Chicago, Seattle, Edmonton, and Toronto.



Instructor Jan Keryluk - Manitoba Fitness Council - Fitness Leader Winnipeg

Jan Keryluk

Is a Wellness Facilitator on the Community Wellness Team for the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority.  Within her role, Jan delivers health promotion classes along with chronic disease and injury prevention programs for schools, community groups and work places..  The Manitoba Fitness Council, recognized her as Fitness Leader of the Year in 2012.  She also received the Healthy Living Award in 2006 from the Reh-Fit Centre Foundation of Winnipeg and the Women and Sport Breakthrough Award in 2002 from the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women in Sport (CAAWS).I am celebrating 15 years as a certified fitness leader and I’m still loving every minute of it!  Fitness classes are amazing opportunities to share my passion for movement to music.  My goal is to help you improve your fitness level and to keep it FUN!”

Stephanie Jeffrey

Holds almost 20 years of experience in recreation, fitness and community development. She believes heavily in not only talking about physical activity but getting out and being active. In addition to her role as the Executive Director of the Manitoba Fitness Council, she is a certified fitness leader, leading classes in Resistance Training, Aquafitness and yoga weekly. She created “office workouts” and loves to share her passion for being active.
